Jarhead Shines in Santa Maria Sun

Tuesday, December 20th, 2011

We are pleased to share that Jarhead Wine Company was recently featured in a Santa Maria Sun story about charitable endeavors in the local wine industry.

In the story, food and wine columnist Wendy Thies Sell writes, “In this season of giving, we are reminded to do what we can to improve the lives of those less fortunate. Residents on the Central Coast have generously raised millions of dollars over the years, allowing nonprofit groups to do their important work. It is worth mentioning that the local restaurant and wine industries contribute to our community all year long, not just around the holidays—and in a very big way. ”

She notes how numerous local wineries “pay it forward,” including Jarhead Wine Company:

Adam Firestone founded a wine company with fellow Marine and vineyard foreman Ruben Dominguez with the sole purpose of raising scholarship money for children of U.S. Marines…“It’s not a novelty item, but something we’re very passionate about,” said Firestone, a former captain in the Marine Corps who was deployed to Iraq and Kuwait in 1991.

“For me to be a part of the Jarhead Red program is something very special,” said Chuck Carlson, general manager of Curtis Winery in Los Olivos, where the wines are made. “It gives us all a special feeling, knowing that we are a part of something that continues to touch the lives of those who have served.”

Our thanks go out to Wendy Thies Sell and the Santa Maria Sun for helping us celebrate the spirit of giving during this holiday season.

Long Run Nets Big Funds

Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

Happy Birthday U.S. Marine Corps

Thursday, November 10th, 2011

Today we celebrate the 236th birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps!

As you may recall, Jarhead Red was first made in 1999 as a celebratory bottling for the annual Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation’s November Birthday Ball in Los Angeles. Over the years, the wine gained a following at other Marine Corps Birthday Balls, and we ultimately released the wine nationally to meet growing demand.

On that note, we encourage you to raise a toast to the birthday of the United States Marine Corps, which was established at Tun Tavern in Philadelphia on November 10, 1775.

Team Jarhead at The Marine Corps Marathon

Friday, October 28th, 2011

We are excited to announce that Team Jarhead’s 23 runners have raised more than $40,000 for the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation (MCSF) for the annual Marine Corps Marathon this Sunday, October 30 in Washington D.C.

In total, the larger marathon team supporting the MCSF has raised more than $145,000 for this year’s event, a new record for the organization. This will allow the MCSF to provide nearly 50 scholarships next year.

According to marathon organizers, “Thirty-thousand registered participants will embark on the 26.2-mile journey in the 36th MCM starting at 8 a.m., with live 90-minutes of coverage beginning on Comcast SportsNet at 7 a.m. The MCM promises a spectacular start with international flags from 54 different nations, the supersonic flyover of F/A-18 Hornet attack fighter jets and CH-53 Sea Stallion helicopters, and the firing of the M2A1 Howitzer.”

In its long history, the Marine Corps Marathon has not only made a name for itself in sheer size as the fifth largest U.S. Marathon, but stands as the largest marathon in the world that doesn’t offer prize money, earning its nickname, “The People’s Marathon.”

Raise A Toast to The USMC on November 10

Thursday, October 20th, 2011

As you may may know, Jarhead Red was first made in 1999 as a celebratory bottling for the annual Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation’s November Birthday Ball in Los Angeles.

Click here for more information on the origins of the USMC.

Of course, any wine works for a toast, but for this particular toast, we believe that there’s no better wine for the occasion than Jarhead Red!

A Fish Tale Starring Jarhead Red

Thursday, September 15th, 2011

Our thanks go out to Chris and Deirdre Heimer, who shared the accompanying photo and feedback from their recent annual Fish Fry BBQ:

“Thought you might enjoy a couple photos of your wine featured at our annual Fish Fry (really a BBQ).  The 200 guests enjoyed your wine, and its story.  Jarhead Red does go well with salmon!”

Look at that menu! Ahi, salmon, lentil salad, black bean mango salsa…No wonder 200 people showed up.

A Hearty Welcome Home

Monday, August 22nd, 2011

At Jarhead Wine Company, we are always grateful to receive feedback and stories from the field. We file these under Letters to Jarhead. Here is the latest:

Hi, Adam:

I hope this email finds you well. I did not have the chance to speak with you April when I was doing the educational meetings.

After the meeting at Curtis, I ordered two cases of Jarhead Red. The purpose of the order was to eventually welcome home my Marine son-in-law and his men from, what would hopefully be, a successful mission in Afghanistan. He is a Sergeant with 2/8, Fox Company, out of Camp Lejeune. He and his guys returned home on August 6th, after seven long months in Marjah province.

While a little beaten up and bruised (stepped on a small land mine in February and broke an ankle in July), and mourning the loss of a few good men who didn’t make it back, he and his fellow Marines were very grateful to be home, and in good spirits.

I knew that he and my daughter were planning a welcome home party for his guys and their respective wives, significant others, and families. My wife and I were more than happy to provide a little token of our appreciation for their service to our country. I have been told that they enjoyed the wine immensely, even out of plastic cups.

I never told Dan what I had gotten him, but told him that I had something special for him and his guys when they got home. While I am sure it was not as special as the gift of seeing his wife and 15 month old daughter, I know he appreciated it.

All the best to you and Ruben. I appreciate the mission behind the sales of the wine, and thank you both for your service.

All the best.

Christopher M. Guanciale

Announcing The 2010 Jarhead Chard

Friday, July 29th, 2011

One cannot live off red wine alone…After all, you have to mix in a little white wine once in a while!

In that spirit, we are pleased to announce the release of the 2010 Jarhead Chard, the successor to the inaugural 2009 vintage. We introduced Jarhead Chard to showcase our lighter side and offer a companion to our signature wine, Jarhead Red.

The 2010 Jarhead Chard comes from two of the Firestone family’s estate vineyards in Santa Barbara County—Kingsley Vineyard and the Curtis Estate. The grapes were picked in the cool morning hours to preserve fruit integrity and freshness. After gentle pressing, the wine was fermented in a combination of stainless steel and French oak to maintain crisp flavors and aromatics while bringing roundness to the palate. The wine was aged on the lees for enhanced textural richness.

Visit our online wine shop to purchase the 2010 Jarhead Chard, and consider enlisting in our wine club to ensure a steady supply of Jarhead wines.
